Ethical Search Engine Optimization Tips

Friday, October 16th, 2009

You are surely familiar with the debate on ethical SEO tactics, if you’ve ever been a part of the search engine optimization industry. The debate deals with the adoption of white hat tactics as opposed to black hat tactics.

The first question that we have to consider is, what distinguishes between an ethical and unethical search engine optimization tactic? The dictionary defines an ethical practice as “conforming to accepted standards of social or professional behavior”. When it comes to search engine optimization, the search engines should provide some of the “accepted standards”.

According to some SEO experts, search engines do not want search engine optimizers at all, thereby making search engine optimization an unethical process.

Since SEO is such an essential part of web business, some unfair means have entered the system. These means are usually referred to as “Black Hat SEO”. These methods are unethical and may tarnish the image of those who use the help of the companies which use these methods. Even internet search engines regularly penalize Black Hat SEO.

Therefore, using a Black Hat SEO can affect the reputation of the person using such means (even if by mistake) in addition to affecting their position on a search engine in the long run. In fact, it may even cause permanent damage. Moreover, because of the changing algorithms and the methods used by search engines, the “loopholes” are closed within a short period of time. It can safely be said that Black Hat SEO is not worth the money and the damage that it causes.

Some of the basic SEO techniques that you can apply are the following:

Enlist your site with web directories and search engines. Since these can carry your message to your potential customers, remember to choose them carefully. Your site will probably not be listed in the first page directly, but if everything goes well, you’ll soon find it on the first page.

If your site is based on html or xml, then use W3C to validate it. The idea is to make your site convenient for the search engine as well as “user friendly”. Thus, keep the design and layout simple and easy to use. You can use the help of the free internet SEO services.

Try and make your site lively and creative. It’s a good thing if you’re site is interesting rather than boring. Use newer features and update the site regularly so that it doesn’t become boring for the visitors. Then, both the search engines and your potential customers will be greeted by some thing new and interesting every time they visit your site.

Apply SEO services such as link building, press release, blog marketing, article writing. In order to promote your site and boost the sales, make sure these services reach the end user.  Needless to say, good content is what drives search engine optimization. Remember to always put maximum emphasis on the content. You can never go wrong as long as you provide unique, relevant and interesting content on your site.

What Matters with Meta Tags Optimization?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

There is a hidden element in your webpage that can help your marketing efforts considerably.  Although many webmasters tend to ignore these little gems, the fact of the matter is that they can help you to outdo your competition in many cases.  I’m talking about meta tags and the proper use of them.  Of course, along with the proper use of these tags comes a cautionary statements as well.  Meta tags optimization needs to be approached properly or else you run the risk of being dropped from the search engines or being buried so deep that nobody is ever going to find you at all.

The most important element as far as meta tags optimization is concerned is the title of the webpage itself.  This is something that you should take a considerable amount of time optimizing and writing.  First of all, you should always be including your target keyword or keyword phrase within the title tag itself.  After all, this is what people are going to see whenever they are searching on Google and other search engines.  If you use the target keyword phrase and people search for that phrase, it will become bold whenever they are viewing it in the search engines.  This can increase your click through rate considerably.

Another important part of meta tags optimization is making sure that you put a compelling line in the title tag as well.  Although it may be enough for you to simply to include the keyword phrase that you are targeting, adding a few additional words which will entice the people to click on the link to your website can be quite beneficial.  For example, if your keyword phrase was “dog training” you would want to use something enticing in the title tag that included the keyword phrase, such as “Dog Training Tips and Tricks”.

Another important part of meta tags optimization is the description tag.  Although many people consider this to be a dead tag, the search engines still use it, at the very least for text in the search engine results.  Even Google from time to time will still use the description tag although for some reason or another they will, at times, simply pull random text off of the webpage.  Make sure that you include your target keyword phrase in the description tag as well as a call to action.  It may give you a little boost in the search engines but if you use the tag correctly, you will see a jump in your visitors from the search engines.

The only other meta tag that really should be looked at is the keyword tag.  This is not as important of an element in meta tags optimization as it used to be but it is still worth including.  Use your target keywords as well as a view related keyword phrases that are included on the webpage.  Be careful not to overdo it or it may be considered spamming by the search engines and you could receive a penalty.

Another great way to drive traffic to your website is to take advantage of manual traffic exchanges.

Affiliate Marketing – Don’t Reinvent the Wheel

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Affiliate marketing is both new and old. It is new in that it has a new delivery system – the internet. It is old in that it is similar to the past sales systems where sales reps sell a product that someone else owns, earning a commission for doing so. The difference in the two is significant. In contrast to sales representation, affiliate marketing means no inventory having to be carried, low-cost business, unlimited income potential, worldwide customer base, low risk due to no-cost or low-cost startup, and twenty-four hour business due to the nature of internet marketing. It is THE way to make money in sales. Affiliate marketing makes it easier than ever to make a good income with a minimum of time and money.

How do you profit from affiliate marketing? You invest a minimum of money and time in promoting someone else’s product on mail lists or websites. You have to find the right product and the right way to promote that product. Often, article marketing is the perfect way to promote the product, involving writing information filed articles about topics related to your product you wish to promote. For example, if you are promoting a dog training book, you might right articles about dog health, filled with useful information. The key to this is search engine optimization (SEO), meaning you discover the right keywords that will bring traffic to your site or article, but that is not so popular that you have to compete with thousands of competitors.

There is three ways you get paid in affiliate marketing. One is pay per click, where every time someone clicks on your affiliate link that is either in your article, in your email signature, or on your website, a certain, agreed-upon amount is added to your account. This compensation is usually very low, from a few cents to a dollar or so, because just clicking through is no guarantee that the person will purchase the product. Still, every click through is a potential customer, either immediately or at sometime in the future. Many affiliate programs record the customer identifying information so that if they come back and buy later, you get credit for the sale. Another method of compensation is pay per sale. This involves only getting paid if the customer actually buys the product. Usually the compensation is the most with this method, ranging from 10% to as much as 75%. Some affiliate programs just give a set compensation amount, but they usually fall within that percentage range. Another method of compensation is based on pay per lead. In this method, you get a small amount deposited every time someone registers at the merchant website after clicking on your affiliate link. Again, some programs also keep a record of this contact and pay a percentage if a sale is made.

What are some keys to success in affiliate marketing? They include all of the following:

* High quality content – Whatever you use to promote your affiliate product, whether articles, emails, or websites, you need to provide good quality content that is related to your product. This content needs to be updated periodically so your potential customers will come back repeatedly. This is especially important if you are promoting multiple products from the same merchant or the same or related products.

* A newsletter or email campaign – This is often done using an autoresponder which entails very little effort on your part past the initial setup. Just don’t forget to update if you are using an autoresponder so that your content is always current to marketing trends and news that benefits you. Use this method to present new information, make frequent contact with good relevant content, or to let the customer know when you update your website with new information.

* Networking – This involves joining email lists, blogs, or webrings. Any time you can take advantage of someone else’s traffic, you have to work less.

* Optimize your content – Optimizing content means knowing what are the popular keywords, but keywords that are not so competitive that you may never reach the first page of the search engines. Search engine optimization (SEO) just means making your content such that searches for certain keywords will mean your listing will be on the first page.

* Tracking results – You can’t know what is working or not working unless you have a method to track what is happening. Track ads, articles, website visits, ROI, click throughs, and any other information that will tell you what is working and what is not as effective.

To succeed at affiliate marketing, it is important to choose the right product, right merchant, and the right marketing method. Keep all the above affiliate marketing tips in mind and you will enjoy success in affiliate marketing and earn a very decent income with very little investment of time and money.

Writing Content for Other Blogs Builds Traffic

Monday, June 30th, 2008

If you have been writing to your blog on a regular basis and are seeing some good results from doing so, you probably realize that adding regular content is something that can benefit you in a number of different ways. If you’re only using your own blog in order to generate traffic, however, you may be missing out on some of the greatest traffic generating techniques that are now available. The fact of the matter is, there are thousands of different blogs out there and many of them will be on the same subject as yours. How can you write content for another blog and end up getting traffic to your own website?

The first way that this is possible is my using it in order to optimize your blog for search engine listings. One thing that is important to do, especially if you are into SEO is to optimize your pages by writing about specific keywords but then to generate incoming links so that you can rise in the search engine results. One of the easiest ways for you to be able to do this is by generating other blog posts. Many people will open up a separate blog on blogger.com and post to it regularly while linking back to their own website. As long as you do this without being abusive with it, it can really help with your search engine listings.

It is also a good idea to comment on other blogs on a regular basis. Make sure that you add their blogs to your blog reader so that you know the moment that they post a new message. You can then go over and read the post and leave a meaningful comment. The reason why you would want to do this quickly is because it will put you at the top of the list which will generate a few more incoming clicks to your website from other people who read the blog post. It may also be able to help your search engine optimization to a certain extent, especially if they have the nofollow link disabled.

One other way that you can use other blogs to generate traffic for your own is by being a guest writer from time to time. Many people that own blogs don’t necessarily like to update their content because writing is not their favorite thing to do. If you have something to say that it’s on topic and can write fairly well, you would be surprised with how many people will allow you to add your own post to their blog. Of course, you would be adding a link back to your website as well which will generate a lot of traffic and additional search engine optimization for your pages.

Although it is a good idea to concentrate on your own blog, make sure that you’re spreading your wings at least a little bit when it comes to posting elsewhere. You will be surprised with how much this can help you and how many different ways it will pull traffic into your pages.

Article Writing Techniques for Maximum Visitors

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Article marketing is one of the best ways to drive consistent traffic to your website.  This is a fact that is really undisputed and many people that are just starting out with Internet marketing are able to do quite well by writing articles.  Even though it is possible for anybody to come online and make money by doing this, there are some article writing techniques that will maximize your visitors.  If you are simply writing articles and leaving a link back to your website, you are missing out on some of the greatest traffic that you could possibly ever receive.

An article can really be broken down into three separate parts when it comes to article marketing.  Each of these parts must work properly in order for you to maximize the amount of visitors that you will receive.  You have the title of the article, the body of the article and you need to leave a link back to your website.  Let’s take a look at each of these parts of the article and see how they can be improved upon to get the most readers and visitors.

The title of the article is really what is going to pull people to the article in the first place.  If you are using search engine optimization in order to get your articles toward the top of the first page of Google, the title is what is going to be visible.  It is important that you use the keyword phrase that you are targeting in the title of the article but you also need to make it a little bit enticing.  Keep in mind that people will click on another link if they find your title to be boring.  Give them a reason to click on your link and they will readily do so.

The body of the article is a topic that is a bit controversial.  Some people feel that you need to give everything to your readers but if you do so, why would they ever click on your link?  Yes, it is possible for you to fulfill their every desire in the article that you have posted and still have a few click on your link.  If you leave them hanging a little bit and perhaps even promise to give them the rest of the story on your website, your click through rates will soar.

Finally, you need to make sure that you leave your link in an effective way so that people will click on it.  Most of the advice that you will get will say that you need to explain how you are an expert in some area or another.  Let me tell you a secret, nobody cares.  People are not necessarily going to click on your link because you’re an expert on the subject.  They will, however, click on the link if you use good copywriting techniques and entice them to do so.  Make sure that you know the difference between the two and you will see a lot more people visiting your web page as a result.

Linkbaits - Baiting for Links

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Search engine optimization is something that has been around for quite some time but it is a constantly changing environment.  Whenever the Internet was still new, people would exchange links with each other in a one-to-one fashion and the search engines would gobble them up.  Not only that, it was possible for you to rank highly for some very competitive keywords just by exchanging links with other websites.  At that particular time, it really didn’t matter who you were exchanging links with or how many links you exchanged, it was more of a free-for-all than anything else.

Since those days, the way that people link has really changed.  Incoming links to your website are still a very important part of any good search engine optimization campaign.  The fact of the matter is, you really can not rank as well if you are only exchanging links with other websites.  In order to really get the most power out of your incoming links, you need to make sure that they are one way and preferably from websites that are related to yours.  Although there are a lot of different ways that people do this, one of the best ways is by putting out some link bait and allowing it to work for you.

Link bait is really nothing more than content that is interesting enough that people will want to link to it naturally.  You can put this content up on your blog or you can build static webpages that contains it, either one will work very well.  The most important part about this content is that it needs to be interesting so that people will link to it.  If it is just your normal, run-of-the-mill content, people are going to read it and ignore it.  The best way to make sure that your link bait is effective is to either make it humorous or controversial.

Once you have your link bait page up and running, you need to get some initial traffic to it in order to get the ball rolling.  If you are effective in writing this type of content, it becomes viral in nature once the links start coming in.  The best way for you to be able to do this is to post it on some of the blog posting websites such as a digg.com.  If your website gets additional digs as a result of it being on there, they can stay at the top of the list for quite some time and the flood of traffic that you will be getting is phenomenal.  You should also make sure that you’re using stumbleupon.com as this can send an additional stream of traffic to your website.

Although this type of linking is good, the real benefit will come whenever people start referring to your page on their blog or website.  This is where the real search engine optimization benefits come from and it can pull your listings up through the search engines very quickly.

Putting Yourself out There with Article Submissions

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

There are some search engine optimization techniques that will always benefit you in one way or another.  One of these techniques that has been around for a very long time is known as article marketing.  Of course, many people are familiar with the term Bum Marketing but really, all this is is a glorified form of article marketing.  The concept itself is very simple to understand.  You write articles that are topical in nature about your particular niche and then you distribute them to the various article directories on the Internet.  The benefit to you?  You get to put at least one link back to your website in the bio box of the article.

Most article directories will require anywhere from 250 to 400 words for every article that you submit.  For most people, they tend to go for the minimum number of words in order to submit the most amount of articles in a short period of time.  There is a lot of method to this madness and it certainly is true that by submitting multiple articles, you will also be able to gain multiple links into your website.  Many people also write variations of their articles for the different article directories and they do this for a specific reason.  There is a school of thought that says that Google will discount articles that are duplicate and may not count the links back into your website from these duplicate articles.

Article submissions to these directories are great and they are a perfect way for you to gain some back links and to get the search engines interested in your website.  They do have their limitations, however, and many of them do not allow linking to your website within the article itself. For this reason, Google may not give that much weight to articles that have the link at the bottom of the article and not in the body of the article.  That is why another method of article marketing comes into play, one that can get you some of the best links that are available on the Internet.

It is often difficult to get websites to link back to you, especially if they have a lot of weight in the eyes of Google.  It is possible, however, that you can get a link back to your website in exchange for writing some original content for use on their website.  Of course, you’re never going to know unless you ask so try writing some of these website owners with your offer of free, original content in exchange for a link back to your website.  You will probably be pleasantly surprised with the number of webmasters that will take you up on your offer.

Writing articles is an excellent way to get exposure for your website and to begin compiling links that will help you in the free search engine listings.  If you are persistent in your efforts and you do things the right way, you will be surprised at exactly how far this type of marketing can take you.

Search Engine Optimization for Quick Results

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

A Web business will live or die according to the number of people who visit their sites.  Just as a store cannot stay in business if it does not have clients coming through its doors, someone that is involved in Internet marketing is also similarly out of luck if they fall into the same situation.  That is why it is important to make sure that you have plenty of traffic coming to your website on regular basis.  One of the best ways to do this which also happens to be free is through search engine optimization.

Many people consider search engine optimization or SEO to be something that is very difficult to do.  To be sure, it is not something that somebody can just pick up overnight but there are some basic things that can be done that make a difference in your rankings in the search engine.  As long as you keep taking care of the basics, you can simply expound on them in order to help your rankings with the search engines.  The most important thing is that you do not try to cut any corners or to make it too difficult for you to do.  Make a schedule and stick to it and you will be happy with the results.

At the very core of any SEO efforts are incoming links.  Yes, making sure that your pages themselves are optimized for particular keywords is also important but you can rank for keywords that are not even on your webpage if you position your incoming links properly.  Acquiring these links, however, can be something that is relatively difficult to do.  That is, of course, unless you know a few shortcuts that you can take.

You can spend all the time that you want trying to get incoming links from authority websites in your particular niche.  Unfortunately, they simply do not come easy and it may actually come at a very high price.  You can get links to your website that will matter a lot as far as your search engine positioning is concerned through other means.  Submitting unique articles to the article directories and including a link back to your website is one of these ways.  You can also offer to write a unique article for one of the authority sites in exchange for a link back to your own.

One easy way to get incoming links to your website that will propel you toward the top of the search engine results is to use Web 2.0 websites.  This includes everything from social bookmarking to building pages and blogs on websites such as blogger or Squidoo.  Build as many of these as you can and interlink them in such a way that it creates a natural looking linking pattern and then link back to your website from some of the more popular pages.  You would be surprised at how quickly this will increase your search engine rankings.

Reciprocal Linking - Is it Worth the Effort?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Having incoming links to your website is the single most powerful way to gain recognition in the eyes of the search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN.  The types of links that you have pointing at your website, however, will make a large difference in the type of attention and recognition that you get from the search engines.  Things that worked a few years ago are not necessarily the things that work well now.  In order to stay on top of the search engine result pages, you need to stay on top of what the search engines require.

Several years ago, it was a fairly easy thing to get to the top of the search engine result pages, or SERPS by launching a massive reciprocal linking campaign.  You simply sent out massive amounts of e-mail to webmasters offering a link to their website in exchange for a link back to your own.  As a matter of fact, it really didn’t even matter what kind of website you were acquiring the links from, as long as the link pointed towards you.  Google was counting all of these links as being beneficial and pointing to the fact that your website was an authority on your particular subject.

Once the word was out, so to speak, some people over used this method to the point where Google eventually stopped counting reciprocal links as being all important as far as ranking your website.  As a matter of fact, too much reciprocal linking may have even been an indicator that your website was participating in something that they disagree with.  Overnight, people lost their position in the SERPS as a result of this change in the Google algorithm.  Does that mean, however, that all reciprocal linking is bad?

Reciprocal linking can still be a very important part of your search engine optimization plan.  What you don’t want to do, however, is to rely entirely on this form of linking.  Google loves links and they probably always will but you need to start developing campaigns that will result in one way links into your website from authority websites within your same niche.  Links from off-topic websites and reciprocal linking will still continue to give you some weight but the all powerful one way link is what will launch your website to the top of the results.

Even though reciprocal linking may be close to dying, it is still an easy way to gain a little bit of recognition.  There are still plenty of scripts out there which make reciprocal linking an automated process and if used properly, can make a difference in your rankings.  As of right now, Yahoo and MSN still give credit to these reciprocal links and Google still credits them to a certain extent.  Until they are totally dead, it will always be a good idea to include them in your marketing efforts as they may make the difference between you being number two on the listings or number one.

Off Page Search Engine Optimization Techniques

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Of all of the traffic that you can get your website, some of the best visitors will come as a direct result of your website being listed in the search engines.  Not only is this traffic very targeted, since they are looking for something specific, it is also free, which makes it all the more valuable.  In an effort to gain this free search engine traffic, many individuals have begun employing various search engine optimization techniques to help their websites to rank better.  These techniques come in two basic forms, on page and off page optimization.  Although on page optimization is important for you to understand, it is the off page optimization that will really propel your website to the top of the list.

Although there are many different things that you can do in order to improve your search engine rankings, the most popular and most effective is through obtaining inbound links to your website.  These links can take on a variety of different forms and they can come from a number of different areas but some of them are much more effective than others.  Let’s start at the bottom of the list of links that you can obtain and work our way up to the most effective.

Several years ago, it was very common for individuals to exchange links to their websites.  This was a process that is known as reciprocal linking and it helped many people to be able to gain SEO ground within the various search engines.  Unfortunately, this pattern of linking was also very easy to exploit and many websites overdid the process until it became almost the useless.  Today, the search engines put very little value on a reciprocal link but that doesn’t mean that it has no value whatsoever.  It should still hold a position in your SEO efforts, just make sure you don’t focus entirely on this type of link.

Another type of link is a one-way link that comes from efforts that you make to get listed on a variety of different websites.  These can include directory links, links from articles that you have written and links in forum posts that you have made.  One of the most popular of these is article marketing where you write articles on topic, post them to the various article directories around the Internet and include a link back to your website.  This can help you to gain some ground in the search engines if it is done properly and persistently.

The holy grail of links, however, is a one-way link from a well-established, on topic website.  Unfortunately, these are very difficult to obtain as many of these websites will not link out to other sites.  If you make your content compelling enough, however, you may get some natural links from these websites.  You can also offer to write original content for their website in exchange for a link.  What ever it takes to get your link on their site, it is well worth the effort as this will help to propel you to the top.
