Resale Rights and Private Label Rights explained

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

A growing business in internet marketing has become the trade in resale rights for informational e-books, articles and software. The web is driven by information and this can be a very lucrative market. However, a clear understanding of these “resell rights” is of utmost importance to avoid possible legal problems. If you come across a resell rights piece of merchandise it is necessary to read the attached disclaimers to understand just what you are planning to buy.

NORMAL RESELL RIGHTS:
This is the most basic form of resell rights. It means that once you have bought the product, be it an e-book, report or software program, you can then offer it for sale to your own customers. You are not allowed to change or modify it in any form.

MASTER RESELL RIGHTS:
The master resell rights are very similar to the normal rights with the exception that once you have sold it to a customer then, they too, have the right to sell it again. This is just an “added value” bonus that can be used to promote the product in hopes of making the sale.

The biggest dilemma most internet businessmen have with the normal and master resell rights is that, by not being able to modify the product, they are in effect advertising for the author of the book. It comes complete with all their links and contact information that can take traffic from your site to theirs.

REBRANDING RIGHTS:
In order to compensate internet merchants for promoting and selling their books, some authors offer the option to “rebrand” the product. In this process the author’s links are replaced with the contact information and website url’s of your website or internet business.

PRIVATE LABEL RIGHTS:
By far the most useful products are those that come with private label rights. Private label article packs especially are designed to give a new website owner a select group of content articles to populate the pages of the website without having to write them first. It is instant content to keep the website growing and fresh for it’s users.

The advantage of private label rights is that you can claim it as your own, you can modify it, rewrite it and resell it. Private label article packs are usually written for a specific niche and tend to be written in a fairly generic style. This is intended so that you can customize and add your own particular details and information into the pre-existing structure of the articles.

In order to increase your page rank with the search engines you will want to customize your private label articles. Duplicate content across multiple sites will lower the page ranking. The advantages to this editing is that it can be done on the fly after you have the basic website up and going and it takes nowhere near as much time or effort to edit than it would to create your own totally unique content.

So when you are building up your own internet empire, be sure you know just what rights you are buying to the informational products that interest you. Make sure that if you are wanting it for modification that you are allowed to do so. As with so much in life, you need to know your rights.
